What is more frightening than the thought of being intentionally poisoned by someone in authority over you? Perhaps, offspring being born with devastating birth defects, learning disorders, or rare illnesses? Maybe dying of horrible cancers, heart conditions, or complications of Parkinson’s Disorder? These are not merely frightening thoughts to those exposed to Agent Orange; it is reality, life and death.

Over the weekend, there were wide reports coming from Turkey that police were using Agent Orange on protesters as a form of crowd control. Social media, especially Twitter became ablaze with re-tweets calling foul to this form of force by Turkish police on people who were trying to protest unrest within Turkey. Social media accounts of the violence fueled more protesters to join the throng. Rampant reports of police using tear gas and high force water cannons to dissipate the crowd were coupled with images.

Agent Orange advocates and founders of (COVVHA) Children of Vietnam Veterans Health Alliance INC. , Kelly L. Derricks & Heather A. Bowser, felt after researching media reports about the incident in Turkey, it was important keep the dialog about Agent Orange set in fact and not fiction. COVVHA is fighting for justice for all generational victims of Agent Orange. It is a difficult fight shrouded in denial, secrecy and lack of media support. It is coupled by the urgent needs of sick and dying offspring of those exposed.

Agent Orange has a notorious history in Vietnam from 1961-1971. The United States military used several chemical herbicides during the Vietnam War to “help” in the War effort. The military sited the thick jungle foliage of Vietnam, and the enemy’s access to food crops, as reason to spray an unfettered amount of chemicals onto South Vietnam, killing all the vegetation in its spray zone. The military deducted, if the enemy had no food and no place to hide, the U.S. and Allies would be victorious in Vietnam. In the end, they sprayed an estimated eighteen million gallons of Agent Orange, on a country the size of New Mexico.

Protesters in Turkey have stated the police were shooting orange liquid filled canisters at the crowd. Agent Orange used during the Vietnam War was colorless. It was called agent orange because of the orange stripe around the middle of the fifty five gallon barrel it was stored in. It was not orange. However, a Turkish protester seeing this substance being shot would think something is very wrong here. It is natural for them to question what police were shooting at them. If a protester was un-knowledgeable of the history of Monsanto, Dow, and the 5 other chemical company’s recipe for herbicide, it’s not a far leap for a protester to think the Turkish police, firing an orange substance at them could think they were using Agent Orange. At that point protesters believe it had gone well beyond crowd control. Instead the police were trying to kill protesters with chemical warfare.

Agent Orange wasn’t used as a crowd deterrent it was used to defoliate plant material. It was not sprayed directly on people as an act of chemical warfare. However, many were indirectly sprayed with Agent Orange during its use in Vietnam. Many U.S. and Vietnamese soldiers and Vietnamese civilians have recounted times when they were exposed by aerial spray. Others were exposed when handling the chemical with no protective gear, working or living in areas that had been defoliated, or drinking contaminated water or food. The U.S. Military has fought back against outrage that Agent Orange was used as chemical warfare. They state it was used strictly as vegetation control, an agricultural chemical. The problems with the herbicides used in Vietnam were they were toxic. They were contaminated with an industrial byproduct called dioxin. Dioxin is one of the deadliest known contaminants to man. Production of Agent Orange ended in the 1970’s.

The process of dying at the hands of Agent Orange is a long painful process, with the exception of Chloacne, which appears shortly after acute exposure; symptoms of exposure do not surface for years. Police are looking for quick responses in riot control situations.

A quick internet image search about the effects of Agent Orange on the children of Vietnam can leave a person horrified. Babies today are still being born in Vietnam with severe deformities, especially in areas where the deadly dioxin is still in high concentration in Vietnam’s soil. There are still twenty eight such places in South Vietnam today.

The plight of America’s Vietnam Veterans, Australian Veterans, and Vietnamese Veteran’s illnesses and battle to gain justice has been going on for over forty years. Children and grandchildren of all, who fought in the Vietnam War from around the globe, are currently pleading for those in power to recognize the birth defects and diseases they suffer from and believe are caused by their parent or grandparent’s exposure to Agent Orange. All of these groups cannot afford the reality of their life or death fight to be watered down or distracted from by Facebook and Twitter posts from Turkey.

So was this report from Turkey simply a misstep by a confused, uninformed protester, or was it something else? Could Turkish protesters have been trying to ride the impact of the fear associated with Agent Orange to gain more recognition for their county’s unrest? Or was it a simple mistake, which people perpetuated by not checking their facts? If the act by Turkish protesters was to gain international media exposure by claiming Agent Orange was used on them, it’s worked. The whole world did a double take when headlines read,” Turkish Riot Police, Starts Using Agent Orange,” all of the sudden the focus of the protest was lost.

There isn’t any evidence of Agent Orange being used in Turkey. Members of the media and activists must check the facts so disinformation is not spread. To be successful we must push ourselves to be knowledgeable before just clicking the share button.

The challenge is to stay focused to the matters at hand. Turkey is going through unrest. Agent Orange is continuing to kill people every day. Don’t confuse the two, and do not turn away, your attention matters.

GMO’s – 12 Reasons To Avoid Them

Let’s Face It, There will always be someone who looks at you like a deer in headlights when you try to explain why GMO’s are not safe. Maybe this will help.

1. GMOs are grown with toxic chemicals and resulting pesticide residues are known to be harmful to human health.

2. Research has shown that laboratory mammals fed GMOs suffer adverse effects that include damage to kidneys, liver, adrenal glands, spleen, and heart. Additionally, their immune systems were compromised and in some cases brain size was reduced.

Environmental harms.

3. GMO crops require huge amounts of chemicals that are harmful to soil, water, the atmosphere, and creatures. Although they are promoted as a technology to reduce pesticide usage, GM crops in the U.S. used greater than 26 percent more pesticides per acre in 2008 than non-GMO crops, based on U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) data.

4. GMOs are actually increasing the need for stronger and more poisonous pesticides. For example, one agrochemical company is awaiting USDA approval of corn and soybeans resistant to 2, 4-D, a chemical related to Agent Orange.

5. GMOs are causing a growing epidemic of “superweeds.” These massive weeds have evolved a resistance to glyphosate, a chemical used on GM crops. Stronger toxic chemicals and soil-eroding tillage operations are required in order to eliminate superweeds.

6. GMOs contribute to global warming: GM crops require synthetic nitrogen fertilizers, which are responsible for approximately 60 percent of total emissions of nitrous oxide (a greenhouse gas nearly 300 times more potent than CO2). GM crops use high amounts of fossil fuels through the production of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers.

7. GMO practices contaminate our organic and local food systems. A report titled, Gone to Seed, found that 50 percent or more of non-GMO corn, canola, and soybean seed have been contaminated with GM genes.

8. Beneficial insects can be harmed. A Cornell University study showed that monarch butterflies suffered higher mortality rates when consuming milkweed leaves dusted with the Bt toxin associated with GM crops. And recently, pesticides called neonicotinoids have been blamed for the collapsing bee populations.

Harms to social and human rights.

9. GMOs are promoted as way to feed the world and mitigate hunger; however, numerous studies demonstrate that the GM crops do not produce higher yields as claimed. As one example, a USDA publication reports that “GM crops do not increase the yield potential.”

10. GMOs lead to corporate control over seed and food: Today only one company controls about 95 percent of GM seeds. This limits access to seeds, which are the center of food and life.

11. These large agri-corporations do not let farmers save seeds, a basic practice that has continued for centuries to ensure food security.

12. GMO agriculture is an extension of current industrial-farming practices that have resulted in the loss of family farms and farmer livelihoods around the globe.

“You Might Be Infertile Because Your Grandparents Were Mucking Around in Harmful Chemicals”

New research shows that if your grandmother or even your great-grandmother came in contact with some very common environmental chemicals, you could be suffering the consequences today in the form of male infertility, ovarian disease and the early or late onset of puberty.

It’s freaky when you think about it. It means that generations ago, for example, a pregnant woman was exposed to, say, DEET, the most common insect repellant in the whole world. Her baby grew up to have his own children and passed along mutations that occurred during mom’s exposure. Those children went on to also pass along those changes when they had their own kids, and there’s no telling how many future generations might be affected.

Michael Skinner and his colleagues at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, published data supporting this phenomenon today in Public Libray of Sciences. In addition to DEET, they looked at several other common chemicals including those found in soft plastics, pesticides, and jet fuel. They also looked at dioxin, the contaminant in Agent Orange.

Skinner and his colleagues have published several other studies looking at a chemical called vinclozolin, a common fungicide used on crops. They found it impaired fertility, and that the effect was carried down through generations. Now, the scientists are adding BPA, phthalates, pesticides, DEET, permethrin, dioxin, jet fuel, hydrocarbons, and JP8 to the list of chemicals with a similar effect.

“We didn’t expect them all to have transgenerational effects, but all of them did,” Skinner told me. “I thought hydrocarbon would be negative but it was positive too. This tells us that it’s not simply a unique aspect for a unique compound but that many environmental compounds have the ability to do this.”

The reasons behind choosing which chemicals to study partly came from the Department of Defense, which initiated the study. Why jet fuel? Because military bases spray it on roads to control dust. That’s also why they looked at three plastic compounds found in disposable water bottles: troops stationed overseas almost always drink bottled water.

Agent Orange & Infertility – Issues all too common for children of Vietnam Veterans

Today my words are meant to help uplift, empower and heal you. I know the feelings written here personally and it has hurt me in the past. I would like to give you some helpful ideas on how you can help children. How you can have them be a part of your life. How you can help them to fulfill their dreams, goals and lives even if you cannot have your own.

Recently I lost another child and finally put into motion a means that I would not concieve again to avoid the pain. I wanted to have my husbands child so badly that I could almost see him already. I felt that he was almost here and I could reach out and touch him and change my life. It was a boy I know that and it tore me open. I cried for weeks about this and I just want you to know that I truly understand how hard it is. This was not my first loss of a child but this one hurt the most.

I have had my share of trouble conceiving a child and then when I could was not able to carry to term. I made some changes in my lifestyle without the intention of having a baby at that time. I got rid of all the chemicals and animal products and voila ..side effect I was pregnant. I was so excited and happy. Then I found out the truth about what was happening and in the end I kissed my child goodbye and told him through tears that I was so sorry that I couldn’t be the mother that he had chosen.

I dealt with that pain and came out the other end knowing that I am here for another reason. That as much as my whole life i heard things like *Oh my god you will make such a good mom* to *You are so maternal* Why can’t I help children or adopt them and give them a better life? Why can’t I be their teacher and inspiration? Why can’t I help other people who feel like i do? I thought about it for months and came to the conclusion that I could do all and any of these things that I wanted to. The only limitation in place is what you believe there is. You can accomplish so much more than you may even realize.

I think that it is very important to remember that you may not be able to have your own child. But there are millions upon millions that could benefit from the love you hold in your heart for the ones you cannot have. They are just there waiting for you to find them, to lift them up and out of their desperate circumstances. To show them a better world and a kinder heart than they may have seen. So long as your choice is kindness and love towards a lonely or hurt child it is a good one.

These links will be a road that you may choose to go down. Remember while you do that just as you may feel alone and without joy and love, there are many children that feel the same exact way that you do. You hold this amazing gift in your hands and it is called free will. You can choose to gift and uplift and show these young people that they may suffer and that life is difficult but it is also filled with surprising kindnesses and gentle loving people.

I try to think what the reasons could be as to why people cannot have children. There are so many it would take a very long time to cover even half of the reasons. But I think that while it is a heartbreaking thing to have to realize there is a reason I believe. We are here to help others. We are here to look at and find children that need us and just help them in any way we can. Mourn your losses and move on it is the best thing you can do for yourself. It may sound harsh but that is the truth. You are here for another potential purpose. Perhaps you are meant to be Father or Mother to the children of the world. Perhaps you were given a gift instead. One that could make a huge difference in the world. Have you considered that?

We are all here just floating around and sometimes we see something. We stop and look at it and examine it closely because it speaks to us. Loving other human being that may not be your blood is one of those things that passes by us. We should stop and examine it and see what we can do to help others and in doing so heal ourselves.

I have been amazed at how many things we can do to help children. We could just type in volunteer to help children and find out for yourselves what is out there. What we can do to make a difference in the lives of so many children that lack hope. Because they have been hurt so badly that they find trusting someone difficult. But if this is what you want to do then there is nothing stopping you from helping someone else. Imagine the power that you possess! You could change the life of another human being for the better!

You could volunteer at your local school. See if they need any help and do what you can. If you have medical problems and I know that many of you do then tell them your limitations. Many would be happy to have the help from anyone. If they cannot work with you then keep trying and see what you might be able to start in your community. There is always some way to help others.

I personally casted both of my votes and included the following statement to the United States House and Senate: I support H.R. 1699 (“To amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to require that genetically engineered food”) because… GMO foods are engineered with health threatening compounds and chemicals and then sprayed with half of the chemical compound used in the production of AGENT ORANGE. The U.S. Gov’t killed my Father at the age of 37 after serving in the Vietnam War. Agent Orange/DIOXIN was passed through his sperm mutating my DNA. I have to fight for my life every single day with more than 30 diagnosed illnesses at the age of 38 and so do tens of thousands of other Children of Vietnam Veterans who were exposed. Now the gov’t doesn’t care that we are being DOUBLE EXPOSED. That’s Capital Murder if you ask me. You’ll see me standing in a court room bringing charges of Murder against the United States Govt before you see me standing down on GMO.

GMO Facts and Verified Product List

What are GMOs?
GMOs, or “genetically modified organisms,” are plants or animals created through the gene splicing techniques of biotechnology also called genetic engineering, or GE). This experimental technology merges DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding.

Virtually all commercial GMOs are engineered to withstand direct application of herbicide and/or to produce an insecticide. Despite biotech industry promises, none of the GMO traits currently on the market offer increased yield, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, or any other consumer benefit.

Meanwhile, a growing body of evidence connects GMOs with health problems, environmental damage and violation of farmers’ and consumers’ rights.

Are GMOs safe?
Most developed nations do not consider GMOs to be safe. In nearly 50 countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, there are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production and sale of GMOs. In the U.S., the government has approved GMOs based on studies conducted by the same corporations that created them and profit from their sale. Increasingly, Americans are taking matters into their own hands and choosing to opt out of the GMO experiment.

Are GMOs labeled?
Unfortunately, even though polls consistently show that a significant majority of Americans want to know if the food they’re purchasing contains GMOs, the powerful biotech lobby has succeeded in keeping this information from the public. In the absence of mandatory labeling, the Non-GMO Project was created to give consumers the informed choice they deserve.

Where does the Non-GMO Project come in?

What are the impacts of GMOs on the environment?
Over 80% of all GMOs grown worldwide are engineered for herbicide tolerance. As a result, use of toxic herbicides like Roundup has increased 1S times since GMOs were introduced. GMO crops are also responsible for the emergence of “super weeds” and “super bugs:’ which can only be killed with ever more toxic poisons like 2,4-D (a major ingredient in Agent Orange). GMOs are a direct extension of chemical agriculture, and are developed and sold by the world’s biggest chemical companies. The long-term impacts of GMOs are unknown, and once released into the environment these novel organisms cannot be recalled.

How do GMOs affect farmers?
Because GMOs are novel life forms, biotechnology companies have been able to obtain patents with which to restrict their use. As a result, the companies that make GMOs now have the power to sue farmers whose fields are contaminated with GMOs, even when it is the result of inevitable drift from neighboring fields. GMOs therefore pose a serious threat to farmer sovereignty and to the national food security of any country where they are grown, including the United States.

We have compiled a list of 731 reported illnesses that the biological Children of Vietnam Veterans are suffering from to try and find common threads. There have been no official claims that anything on this list has been proven to be caused by Agent Orange/Dioxin unless otherwise noted in the information below. Other reports indicate that there are up to 30 years of illnesses and conditions being collected that we suffer from as the second generation. While many of us are born with these problems, our members that participated in this list are generally between the ages of 20-45 both male and female, often with no prior family history. THE INFORMATION INCLUDED IN THE ARTICLE IS MISLEADING AND INCORRECT

Let’s start with using the term, Agent Orange Dioxin. This is the “unique circumstance” our military members were exposed to, by their own government.

I think it’s totally disrespectful to not mention what the disability compensation is connected to.

The government used a chemical herbicide nicknamed Agent Orange (due to the orange stripe on the barrel). They used 22 million gallons on Southeast Asia to kill the vegetation, and deny the enemy cover. This chemical was also used along the Korean DMZ. Our government told our military was safe. What our troops were unaware of is that it contained Dioxin the most poisonous chemical known to man. Well, they found out, alright. Years later, our Vietnam Veterans began becoming seriously ill. Many died young, many young men acquired “old man” diseases with no prior family history all while our government denied their poison had any role in harming them.

The government waited till 1991 to help our veterans, prior to that they were called crazy or faking. The process has been so slow to help our Vietnam Veterans that even after they started to “Presume” a few illnesses, many Vets succumb to their illnesses leaving their families with only more questions and no support. There are claims dating back to the early 1980’s for Ischemic Heart disease (Added only to the presumptive list in 2010) still in appeal. This is not an easy process no matter what you may be led to believe. It is a tragedy.

Secondly, this article is disseminating incorrect information about the Children of Vietnam Veterans. After coming home from war, Veterans tried to move on with their lives and start their families. They soon discovered their children were being born with horrifying deformities, cleft Palate, Club foot, hip dysplasia, rare disorders, and strange illnesses. Our Government again turned it’s back.

“Vietnam veterans who served in the Republic of Vietnam between Jan. 9, 1962 and May 7, 1975, and later contracted any of these conditions, or have children with birth defects, should apply for disability compensation benefits.”

This is very frustrating especially if this is supposed to be by someone knowledgeable in this field. There are not 18+ birth defects covered in the children of Male Vietnam Veterans. There is only one Spina Bifida. From the VA website:

Are biological children of Veterans who served:Were conceived after the date on which the Veteran first entered Vietnam or the Korean demilitarized zone during the qualifying service period
- In Vietnam during the period from January 9, 1962 through May 7, 1975, or
- In or near the Korean demilitarized zone between September 1, 1967 and August 31, 1971 and were exposed to herbicides. Veterans who served in a unit in or near the Korean demilitarized zone anytime between April 1, 1968 and August 31, 1971 are presumed to have been exposed to herbicides.
If you are the child of a Male Vietnam Veteran you are NOT eligible for compensation unless you have Spina Bifida (NOT OCCULTA- the most common form)

There is no help for the thousands and thousands of children of male Vietnam Veterans that are suffering from congenital deformities, Cancers, Autoimmune Diseases, Reproductive Problems and other rare illnesses. There were 2.8 million people that served in Vietnam. Six to eight thousand of them were women.

The eighteen, plus birth defects you talk about in this article are only covered in the children of WOMEN Vietnam Veterans NOT in the children of Male Vietnam Veterans even though the children of Male veterans suffer greatly with the same illnesses!

Anyone else who have the birth defects listed whose mother was not a Vietnam Veteran WILL BE DENIED.

Covered birth defects include, but are not limited to, the following conditions: NOT COVERED IN THE CHILDREN OF MALE VIETNAM VETERANS!!!!!!!!!!

A Healthy Happy #GMO Free Holiday

With pretty much the biggest holiday approaching it seems we have another dilemma. One that should be identified and solved promptly. What to eat and how to avoid the lovely chemical concoctions that corporations would tell you are safe. Yet when they do not consume it themselves what are the food that you can safely feed to your loved ones? Well I am hoping by providing the following I can perhaps offer you some options to solve this problem.

According to various sources you can have a better chance if you just pay attention to labels. This means taking a little more time when shopping but look at the rewards for doing that. Barcodes can also provide you with information that can help you to avoid these types of scientific creations. They dare call it food. Well perhaps to a guinea pig it could possibly be called food.

Organically grown food can be your best bet when it comes to avoiding GMO’s. Generally organically grown food has a five digit barcode which begins with the number nine. Many GMO products begin with the number 8. So basically this means that a regular banana would have a sticker that might say 4011, an organic banana would say most likely 94011 and a GMO banana would usually have an 84011. This is not tedious when you consider that this is your health we are dealing with here. Your health and that of your family and friends. That should make it worth your while to take your time shopping and be more careful.

My personal advice is to avoid large stores like Walmart and try finding smaller stores, fruit and vegetable stands by the road, home deliveries of locally grown food. Perhaps try planning to grow your own food for next year.The smaller stores are normally killed off slowly because of the so called convenience of bigger parasitic stores such as Walmart, Target, K-Mart etc. It might seem to be you are saving money but you may be putting your health at greater risk by purchasing food here. Fruit and vegetable stands can offer great alternatives to what is offered in the stores. Home deliveries of organically grown local food an be more cost effective than you think. If there is not one in your area then perhaps you might consider sitting down and writing to local farmers and find out what they grow, how they grow it and if they might be willing to work with you. The universal rule I have found to be most true is that where there is a need there will be a service offered to fill that need.

I can already hear people groaning from the cost of organic foods. Yet consider for yourself the costs of the meal that you need and how much food you have left over. Why not make a smaller meal? Involve the children, family and any nearby friends and put them to work helping you to make things. You could get together with another family to cut the cost in half and try something new. Make new friends and have new holiday experiences rather than the same thing. Leading to the same headaches and possible heartaches. Look at what you spend the most money on and try some alternatives. Or try a smaller portion. A family does not need that much meat in order to get the protein that seems so essential. It is not a one sided nutrient only to be found in turkey etc. You may be surprised at the vegetable sources of protein that are available to you and are much more cost effective in feeding a large group of people.

For example one cup of oatmeal provides 6 grams of protein. One bagel and you get 9 grams of protein. I cup of beans and you get 12 grams of protein. Two tablespoons of peanut butter and you have 8 grams of protein. One cup of lentils can give you 18 grams of protein. The point is that I found this by doing a little research. You can find so much information I think the problem is knowing what to look for. So this is why I am offering you bits of information like this. I think that everyone should keep a diary of what they spend and where. This helps them to determine where they could make some cuts in spending. There is always something that you do not really need and can do without. Why pay for debt consolidation when you can do it yourself. Have a look and see what you can do without. Or what you can stop buying and instead learn how to make it yourself. I think people spend too much time taking on far too much themselves when it comes to this time of year. Put your family to work helping you. It helps to bond you together and to have a common goal. Basically you are better off buying food at it’s most basic than risk the processed foods that seem cheaper and faster. They are cheaper and faster sometimes but what is that costing you in the long run?

Newly discovered documents reveal that 50 years ago this week, the Pentagon dispatched a chemical weapons platoon to Okinawa under the auspices of its infamous Project 112. Described by the U.S. Department of Defense as “biological and chemical warfare vulnerability tests,” the highly classified program subjected thousands of unwitting American service members around the globe to substances including sarin and VX nerve gases between 1962 and 1974.

According to papers obtained from the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, the 267th Chemical Platoon was activated on Okinawa on Dec. 1, 1962, with “the mission of operation of Site 2, DOD (Department of Defense) Project 112.” Before coming to Okinawa, the 36-member platoon had received training at Denver’s Rocky Mountain Arsenal, one of the key U.S. chemical and biological weapons (CBW) facilities. Upon its arrival on the island, the platoon was billeted just north of Okinawa City at Chibana — the site of a poison gas leak seven years later. Between December 1962 and August 1965, the 267th platoon received three classified shipments — codenamed YBA, YBB and YBF — believed to include sarin and mustard gas.

For decades, the Pentagon denied the existence of Project 112. Only in 2000 did the department finally admit to having exposed its own service members to CBW tests, which it claimed were designed to enable the U.S. to better plan for potential attacks on its troops. In response to mounting evidence of serious health problems among a number of veterans subjected to these experiments, Congress forced the Pentagon in 2003 to create a list of service members exposed during Project 112. While the Department of Defense acknowledges it conducted the tests in Hawaii, Panama and aboard ships in the Pacific Ocean, this is the first time that Okinawa — then under U.S. jurisdiction — has been implicated in the project.

Corroborating suspicions that Project 112 tests were conducted on Okinawa is the inclusion on the Pentagon’s list of at least one U.S. veteran exposed on the island. “Sprayed from numbered containers” reads the Project 112 file on former marine Don Heathcote. Heathcote, a private first class stationed on Okinawa’s Camp Hansen in 1962, clearly remembers the circumstances in which he was exposed.

Throughout the late 20th century, rumors of Project 112 were widespread among U.S. veterans, but they were quickly dismissed by an American public unwilling to believe its government would test such substances on its own troops. However, following a series of TV news reports by CBS, the Pentagon admitted to the existence of Project 112 and promised to come clean on the issue.In 1961, as the Cold War deepened, the U.S. initiated a comprehensive overhaul of its defensive capabilities in more than 100 different categories; No. 112 on this list was the study of CBW. Envisaged by President John F. Kennedy’s secretary of defense, Robert McNamara, as “an alternative to nuclear weapons,” Project 112 proposed experiments in “tropical climates” and, to evade laws regulating human testing in the U.S., it suggested the use of overseas “satellite sites.” Fulfilling both prerequisites, Okinawa must have seemed a perfect choice.

That disclosure began in 2000, when the Pentagon claimed that there had been 134 planned tests, of which 84 had been canceled. The experiments it admitted carrying out included the spraying of troops in Hawaii with E. coli, subjecting sailors to swarms of specially bred mosquitoes, and exposing troops in Alaska to VX gas. The Pentagon stated that no participants had been harmed in these tests.

Throughout the Cold War until 1969, Washington adhered to a strict policy of neither confirming nor denying the presence of CBW on Okinawa. In all likelihood, it would have continued to do so, were it not for the events of July 8 of that year. On that day, American service members were conducting maintenance on munition shells at the Chibana depot when one of the missiles sprung a leak. Twenty-three troops and one civilian fell sick from exposure to the missile’s contents — likely VX gas — and were hospitalized for up to a week.

Considering the toxicity of such weapons, those exposed escaped lightly. Nevertheless, when the accident was reported, its ramifications were far-reaching: The Pentagon was forced to acknowledge its chemical arsenal on Okinawa — infuriating local residents — and promised to remove the entire stockpile before the island’s reversion to Japanese control in 1972.

Proof of Project 112 on Okinawa?: An excerpt from the history of the 267th Chemical Platoon.

Operation Red Hat, the mission to transport the weapons off the island, was organized by the same man who had brought them to Okinawa two decades previously: John. J. Hayes (by then a general). It also involved the 267th Chemical Platoon, which had been renamed the 267th Chemical Company. During two separate phases in 1971, the military shipped thousands of truckloads of sarin, mustard gas, VX and skin-blistering agents from Okinawa to U.S.-administered Johnston Island in the middle of the Pacific. The consignments totaled 12,000 tons — a terrifying amount considering that many of these substances’ fatal dosage is measured in milligrams. After the final shipment had left the island, Hayes assured journalists, “Every round of toxic chemical munitions stored on Okinawa has now been removed.”

This year marks 60 years since the first delivery of chemical weapons to Okinawa; this week is the 50th anniversary of the launch of Project 112 on the island. However, the continuing illnesses suffered by U.S. veterans including Heathcote and Mohler suggest this problem is far from a purely historical matter — and only now are potential correlations between toxic munitions and illnesses among Okinawan residents coming to light.

In the near future, Washington plans to return a number of U.S. installations on Okinawa to civilian usage. However, just as former U.S. CBW storage sites elsewhere — such as the Rocky Mountain Arsenal and Johnston Island — remain dangerously contaminated, Okinawan land is likely to be handed back in a similarly toxic state.

Under the current U.S.-Japan Status of Forces Agreement, the host government is solely responsible for the cleanup of former bases — a task that’s expected to set Japanese taxpayers back hundreds of millions of dollars. With the true cost in terms of health and capital yet to be determined, there is a real risk that these weapons of mass destruction will poison not only the soil but also American-Japanese-Okinawan relations for decades to come.

In November, Japan’s Association of Commercial Broadcasters awarded the TV documentary “Defoliated Island” a commendation for excellence. The program was based on Jon Mitchell’s articles for The Japan Times investigating the U.S. military’s usage of Agent Orange on Okinawa during the Vietnam War. To the surprise of many, the French court agreed with the claims and evidence presented before it, declaring earlier this year that “Monsanto is responsible for Paul Francois’ suffering after he inhaled the Lasso product … and must entirely compensate him.” The court is said to be seeking expert opinion on how to gauge Francois’ losses in order to determine precisely how much Monsanto will be required to compensate him in the case.

“It is a historic decision in so far as it is the first time that a (pesticide) maker is found guilty of such a poisoning,” said Francois Lafforgue, Paul Francois’ lawyer, to Reuters earlier in the year.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), exposure to alachlor can cause damage to the liver, kidneys, spleen, and eyes, and may lead to the development of anemia and even cancer. The EPA apparently views alachlor as so dangerous, in fact, that the agency has set the maximum contaminant level goals (MCLG) for alachlor to zero in order to “prevent potential health problems.” (http://water.epa.gov/drink/contaminants/basicinformation/alachlor.cfm)

In 2007, France officially banned Lasso from use in the country in accordance with a European Union (EU) directive enacted in 2006 prohibiting the chemical from further use on crops in any member countries. But despite all the evidence proving that alachlor can disrupt hormonal balance, induce reproductive or developmental problems, and cause cancer, the chemical is still being used on conventional crops throughout the U.S. to this very day. Dioxin causes disease, reproductive problems across generations

PULLMAN, Wash. – Since the 1960s, when the defoliant Agent Orange was widely used in Vietnam, military, industry and environmental groups have debated the toxicity of its main ingredient, the chemical dioxin, and how it should be regulated.

But even if all the dioxin were eliminated from the planet, Washington State University researchers say its legacy would live on in the way it turns genes on and off in the descendants of people exposed over the past half century.

Writing in the journal PLoS ONE, biologist Michael Skinner and members of his lab say dioxin administered to pregnant rats resulted in a variety of reproductive problems and disease in subsequent generations. The first generation of rats had prostate disease, polycystic ovarian disease and fewer ovarian follicles, the structures that contain eggs. To the surprise of Skinner and his colleagues, the third generation had even more dramatic incidences of ovarian disease and, in males, kidney disease.

“Therefore, it is not just the individuals exposed, but potentially the great-grandchildren that may experience increased adult-onset disease susceptibility,” says Skinner.

Skinner is a professor of reproductive biology and environmental epigenetics – the process in which environmental factors affect how genes are turned on and off in the offspring of an exposed animal, even though its DNA sequences remain unchanged. In this year alone, Skinner and colleagues have published studies finding epigenetic diseases promoted by jet fuel and other hydrocarbon mixtures, plastics, pesticides and fungicides, as well as dioxin.

The field of epigenetics opens new ground in the study of how diseases and reproductive problems develop. While toxicologists generally focus on animals exposed to a compound, work in Skinner’s lab further demonstrates that diseases can also stem from older, ancestral exposures that are then mediated through epigenetic changes in sperm.

This latest study was funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Skinner designed the study; the research was done by Assistant Research Professor Mohan Manikkam, Research Technician Rebecca Tracey and Post-doctoral Researcher Carlos Guerrero-Bosagna.

Heather A. Bowser (39), Daughter of Bill Morris, of Canfield Ohio and Kelly L. Derricks (37), Daughter of Harry C. Mackel Jr., of Bucks County Pennsylvania are both daughters of deceased Vietnam War Veterans. Each of their father’s were exposed to the deadly herbicide Agent Orange/Dioxin while serving with the United States Military resulting in their untimely deaths. Heather and Kelly were both born with multiple birth defects and illnesses which they still suffer from Today. In early 2012, after many years of independent advocacy, they came together to form ‘Children Of Vietnam Veterans Health Alliance’ a Non-Profit organization seeking justice and providing assistance for the tens of thousands of sons and daughters also suffering from the generational effects of Agent Orange that occurs during the conception of a child.

Karen Y. Wengert (38), Daughter of surviving Vietnam Veteran George Ridgeway, of Newark Ohio, will also be attending the event. Karen’s mother, Barbara Ridgeway (Dunn), who is now deceased, was a key proponent in starting the area’s local VVA chapter. At the age of 8, Karen accompanied by her parents on November 11, 1982, stood in attendance at the official opening of the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. As a surviving Vietnam Veteran, Karen’s father now suffers the severe health effects that Agent Orange / Dioxin is known for leaving in its destructive wake. Recently, Heather and Kelly were very pleased when Karen graciously accepted the position of Secretary as an Official COVVHA board member. Karen has worked tirelessly over the last several months, despite her suffering with numerous illnesses, to ensure COVVHA’s ability to reach the 2ND generation victims of Agent Orange.

Nicknamed COVVHA, Kelly and Heather stress four simple words that have reached millions, not just in the American community, but also the international community of those exposed including Vietnam, Australia, Korea, Japan, Guam, and Canada; “You Are NOT Alone.” COVVHA has vowed that no Vietnam Veteran, Child, Grandchild, or those who were exposed to Agent Orange by other circumstances, will ever feel like they are waging the fight for their lives alone. Heather shared her personal story with Peace Boat participants, describing the ways in which her father’s exposure to Agent Orange in Viet Nam resulted in her multiple birth defects. For the first in a series of lectures covering the topic of Agent Orange, Heather Bowser appeared on stage to discuss her personal connection to the virulent wartime herbicide. Filling the entire auditorium, participants gathered to hear her testimony. Heather, an mother of two from the US with a business in antiques and part time career as a mental health therapist, is also a second generation Agent Orange survivor who was born with multiple birth defects. This has led her to reach out to other innocent victims like her–most of whom have long suffered in silence, bearing the scars of a war that began and ended long before they were born. Heather also speaks out about the issue in order to raise awareness of the need to prevent such horrific man-made chemical disasters in the future.”Agent Orange was the code name for a chemical herbicide developed for the U.S. military, the purpose of which was to deny an enemy cover and concealment by defoliating the trees where the Vietnamese enemy could hide,” Heather explained. She went on to tell the audience that her father Bill Morris was drafted to Long Binh, Viet Nam in 1968, where he was forced to work in conditions where Agent Orange was transported and stored. Heather’s father even recalled servicemen using the barrels for BBQs and collecting drinking water. The U.S. government assured servicemen and the world that Agent Orange was proven to be harmless to humans and would only destroy one crop cycle.

Heather came aboard Peace Boat along with fellow Agent Orange survivors Kenneth Young (far right) and Jenna Mack (left), and journalist Jon Mitchell. Tragically for Bill and other veterans alike, Agent Orange did in fact contain highly poisonous dioxin, which had devastating affects on many people exposed to it. It primarily resulted in flu-like symptoms and rapidly led to life threatening diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and neuropathies. To add to the horror of this deadly chemical, the dioxins in Agent Orange were also proven to spread themselves across further generations by corrupting the DNA and genetic make-up of the children born to parents exposed. Heather went on to explain that soon after the war, her father returned to the U.S. and in October 1972, she was born. “I was born two months premature, missing my right leg below the knee, the top joints of five fingers, my big toe on my left foot with the remaining toes on my left foot webbed.” Heather discussed the emotional impact her birth defects had on her family’s life. “The nurses blamed my parents for my problems referring to me as ‘it’; growing up was a lonely time for me.” Her father also began to notice changes in his own health, initially suffering hypertension at the age of 23, experiencing five heart bypasses by 38, later developing diabetes, at 48 a stroke and at the tender age of 50 he tragically died of a heart attack.Despite the difficulties she has faced as a result of Agent Orange, Heather has been incredibly active and vocal on the topic, particularly in relation to the innocent second and third generation victims. As a co-founder of Children of Vietnam Veterans Health Alliance, or COVVHA, Heather offers a network of support for people living with Agent Orange-related problems. “Despite the fact that we were victimized, we prefer to be called Agent Orange survivors, not victims.” This empowering twist is the type of fuel that powers Heather’s movement, which aims to create a sense of solidarity and strength among the generations affected.

Heather worked closely with Peace Boat volunteers who together helped raise awareness of the ongoing generational effects of Agent Orange. They collaborated to create posters, banners and messages of support for Agent Orange victims, additionally assisting Heather with lectures and workshops. Heather also works towards seeking support from the U.S. government, which up until this point has taken minimal responsibility for the generational effects associated with Agent Orange. While some compensation is available, it is primarily for survivors born to female veterans who were exposed and only in very rare cases for males, and Heather’s condition is invalid under U.S. government designations. She explained that it is not only the sense of neglect from her own government that is immoral but the financial burden left to those in need of medical assistance. “Every morning when I put on my artificial leg, I wonder if the people who decided to dump 20 million gallons of a toxic chemical on Vietnam think of the people who they harmed.

Heather joined the 77th Peace Boat voyage, sailing with participants and fellow Guest Educators from Yokohama to Da Nang, Viet Nam Heather’s argument and cause are not confined to the U.S., however. She has shown incredible empathy for the estimated 4.5 million Agent Orange victims in Viet Nam, making visits to the care centers around hot spots such as Da Nang. She aims to create an international support network that connects the innocent survivors still bearing the burden of a war they were not responsible for. She also raised the issue of the U.S. efforts to clear up the Da Nang base, still contaminated with huge quantities of Agent Orange. “The U.S. government recently offered 43 million dollars to help clean up one of the 28 contaminated hot spots in Viet Nam. This donation is a step in the right direction, but considering the fact that the cost will only cover the clean up for two out of the five hotspots in Da Nang alone, I consider it an insult to the Vietnamese people.” She added, “the clean up comes 51 years after Agent Orange was sprayed in Viet Nam–long after it has already generated numerous victims–and that the U.S. government still does not recognize any responsibility for the human toll of Agent Orange.”

Peace Boat participants piled onto the stage following Heather’s lecture, showing their support for Agent Orange survivors. Through her workshops, Heather also encouraged Peace Boat participants to draw on connections between Agent Orange and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster. Visiting Fukushima last year, Heather established ties with those affected, sharing her knowledge around safety myths and the importance of international solidarity. “The unseen danger is what we have in common. The effects of Agent Orange slowly crept up on the victims and you never know where it will end in your family. Of course nuclear energy is useful, but when there is an error it is hugely damaging to innocent people.”

After docking in Da Nang, Heather visited one of the Agent Orange victim support centers, a partner organization of Peace Boat. There, Heather connected with second and third generation child victims still living with the effects of Agent Orange. Heather’s speech and workshops left a huge impression on Peace Boat participants, inspiring them to create their own events in areas that they are passionate about, both onboard and on land. After her journey onboard the ship, Heather spent a week in Viet Nam visiting some of the areas most heavily effected by Agent Orange in a rare opportunity allowing first, second and third generation non-Vietnamese Agent Orange survivors to connect with Vietnamese survivors. The trip began with a visit to the Da Nang Centre for Supporting Agent Orange and Disadvantaged Children, a centre supported by Peace Boat that offers second generation Agent Orange survivors support and training. “People put greed in front of human life. Governments will go to war without thinking of the people who live there. We all suffer because of war and my future intent is to continue to bring peace and try to promote a future where we can live together, no longer harming each other and no longer harming each other’s children.”

My Journey to Hysterectomy

I know that several of you have either taken this journey already or will be taking it yourself but I would like to share my experience with you in hopes that you will get a glimpse into what it is like to go into the unknown. My journey started with a diagnosis of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome at 18. I had always had problems with my periods, I started at 13 but then I didn’t have another one until I was 15. I had sporadic periods and the pain would intensify with every one I had from then on. I went to Planned Parenthood when I was 18, as I didn’t have a regular OB/GYN, they did a pap test on me, I almost came off the table as the doctor pinched me with the speculum, and she said that since my “situation was so far outside the realm of norm,” she was going to have to refer me to an high risk OB/GYN. At that point, I hadn’t had a period in 2 years. Thus began the roller coaster ride.

I started to see the OB/GYN, which then prescribed birth control pills for me to take to get my periods under control. That is when the facial hair began to really grow in fast, she then added a water pill to make the facial hair stop growing, it didn’t work but I sure did have to go to the bathroom a lot. I changed birth control pills 3 times that year. One made me bleed, one made me sick and one made my hair fall out. I started to have pain in my abdomen and that is when I started getting the large cysts. The pain was unreal. I would usually end up in a hot bathtub full of water, soaking, that is the only thing that would ease the pain.

I got married at 26, Richard and I wanted kids very badly. We tried for 3 years to have children. We went to my OB/GYN, she put me on Clomid, a fertility drug and had me taking my temperature to check for fertility everyday. It was an exhausting process. I had 3 pregnancy tests come back positive and I was exstatic! I had all the symptoms of being pregnant, I was nauseous all the time, I had the breast pain, I was gaining weight, everything, so I called the doc. She gave me a due date of January 21 over the phone and scheduled me for an OB workup and ultrasound. I went in for the appointment and when I went for the ultrasound, the woman, very rudely, demanded to know just who told me I was pregnant. I told her Dr. Yablonkski told me and she said, again, very rudely, “there’s nothing in here, take off your underwear!” So, I did and she shoved the ultrasound wand inside me none to gently and she told me there was no baby growing inside me. I was absolutely beside myself! I was crying and I just wanted to go home and grieve but they made me wait to see the doc. When she finally showed up, she wanted me to take more Clomid and Provera to get rid of my lining. When I told her I didn’t want it, she told me I was being “irrational and overly emotional,” and that I needed to just get back in there and try again. She gave the scripts to Richard, he tore them up, threw them at her and we never looked back.

We went to another OB/GYN at Riverside before I found the one that I have now and she did and exam and told me that I had a chemical pregnancy. She didn’t really explain anything to me. While doing the exam, she found a polyp on my Cervix and she said I might feel some cramping and she removed it with no anesthesia or anything. It was so painful that I had to bite my lip to keep from yelling out. Needless to say, I never went back to her either.

I went to see Dr. Atwood that spring. She looked through my records and saw what happened with the pregnancy that almost was, and she started asking me questions about it. When I told her what the woman at Riverside told me and that she never explained what it meant, she just shook her head and apologized to me. A chemical pregnancy is when the sperm and the egg get close enough to meet but they don’t fertilize into a viable pregnancy and they send out the chemicals to the brain that you are pregnant. It was nice to finally have an explaination of what had happened to me, I thought I was crazy, that was in 2004. We tried a couple of different types of birth control pills to regulate me but getting my diet under control actual did the most good. I was eating more healthy and walking 2 1/2 to 5 miles a day and it did more than any pill for my system. It regulated itself and I could almost set my watch by it. Then I had my first big nervous breakdown. I didn’t care about anyone or anything and I took to my bed.

I started to have pains again with my periods in 2006, it was gradual at first. I would get nasty cramps to let me know I was going to start and then I would be fine after that, then it would be for the first day then I would be fine, then it got to be almost everyday. This became habit so I had gotten used to carrying Ibuprofen in my purse and having it in my locker at work, 1600 mg and I would be able to make it through the day, then 3200 mg wasn’t touching the pain anymore. 2008 comes and the pain in my abdomen ends me up in the ER more than once. It was actually a saving grace. I had a CT scan done and they found spots on my lower lobe of my lungs. After several tests and scans and one cancer scare later, they found that it was Sarcoidosis, not cancer. That is when we first started talking about hysterectomy. That to me was a death sentence. I just knew it to be a dark, scary thing that was going to hurt and that was going to make me stop being a woman!

I suffered for the next 2 years with cramps so bad that they started in my abdomen and went clear through to my lower back. The ONLY thing that made it better was either soaking in a hot bath or I was plugged in with a heating pad all day, everyday! It was so bad toward the end that the pain was radiating down my legs. In 2011, started to get heavier periods and I was passing blood clots the size of baseballs. I was weak and I was sick all the time. I made the appointment with Dr. Atwood and I told her about what was going on and she just asked me, “are you ready yet?” It was then I decided that I had to do the right thing and end the pain and the suffering that I had been living with for YEARS. I didn’t realize how bad it was until she asked Richard how bad it was and he told her that I couldn’t function even to do basic everyday things. I didn’t think he was noticing or that it was effecting him, but it was. We tried for almost 10 years to get pregnant and it was killing me that this was how it was going to end but all Richard said to me was that he wanted me to be ok, that was all that mattered to him. I am thankful and blessed to have him. He was feeling it too.

She scheduled it for October 4th 2011. I had 3 weeks to get used to the idea and believe me, I was terrified! On one hand, I was at peace with the idea. I was tired of the pain, I was tired of being tied to that blessed heating pad, I just wanted it to be over. On the other hand, I was in mourning for the fact that I was 38 years old and I would never have the one thing that I wanted the most in this world, children. I would never get to feel what it was like to carry a child in my womb, I would never get to feel the agony of childbirth. It was just going to have to be ok.

The morning came, and I was nervous. We didn’t tell anyone but my dad and Jane, our good friend Lora and our dearest friend Kelly that I was having the surgery. I needed to be focused on myself and getting through whatever was going to happen on that day. No one was with us at the hospital. I went back and they prepped me for surgery, everyone was really nice, they are at the hospital where it was done. I was so cold, it was freezing back there. I don’t remember anything else til I woke up in my room.

I woke up with Richard and my dad and Jane with me. I just remember wanting to get out of bed right away. I was still groggy. Richard always buys me a stuffed animal when I have surgery, he bought me a TY Bat, my dad brought me some beautiful flowers. I was talking to them and all of the sudden I told them I was going to be sick and it just came in waves. I couldn’t stop, the only thing I can think of now is that I was on a Morphine drip (your best friend) and I hadn’t had anything to eat. The nurses came and changed me and changed me bed and moved me to the room I was going to be in from then on. My bladder didn’t seem to want to cooperate for 24 hours after the surgery. I had a catheter in and I was drinking one of those 32 oz cups of ice water an hour and I wasn’t putting anything out. They were getting very concerned and kept doing ultrasounds on my bladder but it finally turned around right before I was let go to go home. I was told that what she found when she got in my abdomen was that my ovaries were the size of small potatoes and covered with sacs of blood and that scar tissue was beginning to attach to my bowels so instead of leaving my uterus and one ovary like she planned, she had to take everything.

I had staples across my abdomen. They don’t suture you after the hysterectomy. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. It was completely numb across there so I didn’t even feel them, except right before they were to come out, one was getting infected and it was pinching a little . I didn’t feel it one bit when she took them out, it was all still numb when she took them out. I haven’t had any pain since she did the surgery and I am so relieved! I am still numb across my abdomen a year later, but numb I can live with. This is a decision that I wrestled with, am I still a woman, yes. Am I still grieving, some. Do I regret it? No! It is something that we go through as women because our bodies are flawed and need to be corrected, not because there is anything wrong with us as women!

I hope that this glimpse into my journey helps to ease a fear, to let you know that you are not alone.

Military Information For Agent Orange Exposure

Many veterans, including their spouse/widow and children do not know how to obtain veterans military records. At any rate, it is sometimes difficult. In most cases they can be found.

Veterans who apply for VA claims for disability need various records. This also applies to widows and children of veterans applying for DIC (Dependence Indemnity Compensation). This is especially necessary for Agent Orange presumptive exposure. AO is the most complicated of all VA claims.

The first item of business in submitting a VA claim is to obtain a VA claims form packet.
www.va.gov Either call or download VA claim forms. Submit those claim forms to the VA. This gets you into the system as a registrant for disability or DIC.

Evidence of service: DD-214. For AO exposure the VSM (Vietnam Service Medal) awarded, proof of.

Important: On all evidence submitted be sure to include SS#.

Other needed evidence: Record of duty station/s as related to Vietnam service, land, air or sea.. In the case of US Navy, deck logs of ship/s served on in Vietnam waters.
Medical records, civilian and or military that may be related to AO diseases being claimed for veterans disability or DIC.

Other sources of evidence: If able to locate veterans who served with the claimant. Acquire their sworn testimonial (notarized) attesting to possible AO exposure, land air or sea. The attester must provide his or hers full name, address phone number and service number on the testimonial. All evidence submitted must show the claimants SS#.

It is advised to seek help from a VSO (Veterans Service Organization). These organizations can help with VA claims and help with evidence.

The studies of reproductive outcomes among maleveterans have been mostly negative in that service inVietnam was not associated with the risk of fathering a childwith birth defects, spontaneous abortion, stillbirth orneonatal death [Erickson et al., 1984; Donovan et al.,1984; Aschengrau and Monson, 1989, 1990]. However, inthe recent “Ranch Hand study”, neural tube defects (spinabi®da, anencephaly) were reported in four children of U.S.Air Force personnel who sprayed Agent Orange and other herbicides in Vietnam, while none was observed among children of control veterans [Wolfe et al., 1995].

Further-more, when the CDC birth defects study was reanalyzedusing the exposure opportunity index based upon interview data, the risk of spina bi®da was signi®cantly associatedwith the highest estimated level of Agent Orange exposure[Erickson et al., 1984]. Based on these data and others, anInstitute of Medicine panel suggested an associationbetween herbicide exposure in Vietnam and an increased risk of spina bi®da in children [IOM, 1996]

THE SOLDIER AND THE HIPPIE

Yep….As I write this, my hair color loosely resembles the pink cotton candy at the state fair. By the time this is printed, it will probably be more a lilac hue. One of my tattoos is a Tibetan Buddhist mantra, OM MANI PADME HUM. It translates to ,’OM, the jewel in the lotus,’ meaning to find compassion in the darkest, most unexpected places. I say this mantra often when I am at odds with someone, or feel tension of some sort. I also have symbols of the four elements tatted around my wrists, a reminder to keep all of my bodies in balance. According to Eastern mystics and meta-physicians, we have four bodies, of course. One of my heroes is Gloria Steinem. I honestly believe if women ran things, more progress would be made. Add Eastern thought to that equation, and I don’t believe we would find a need for war. The one time I held a cold and heavy gun, I got a bit nauseous. Seriously. I couldn’t do it. My body had a violent reaction to a violent and deadly weapon. In short, these are just some of the reasons I would not make a good soldier. These are also some of the topics that cause my former Marine and Nam vet dad, to argue with me. Or, to put it plainly, he argues and I say my mantras.

The Tibetan monk, Thich Nhat Hanh was interviewed by Oprah recently. He commented that if we each took the time to actively listen to one another, and just say, ‘I hear you. I hear your suffering. I empathize. I understand,” there would be no war. Not try to solve their issue, or argue their beliefs, just listen. I heartily agree. He also spoke of the famous Monk protests during the Vietnam war that upset so many, including my father. Hanh said the monks setting themselves aflame was not like the suicide bombers of today because they were only hurting themselves. To paraphrase, he explained it was their way to call attention to the suffering at the time.
It was because of this act so many years ago, that my father got upset when I started exploring Buddhism. It did not matter that the monks never physically hurt him or his men, he took it as an act against him. It did not matter that some of his men converted to Buddhism while stationed there. Still to this day, he has not forgiven those monks. Nor the protesters he encountered when he returned home in August of 1966. I suppose California was the last place the vets should have landed, with it being a hotbed of hippie counterculture.

“But they were receiving different information about the war than what you were told, Dad. Both of your groups were receiving misinformation. And some of them were just against the war, not you as a person,” I said after studying the era in high school. But, it didn’t matter. He hated them enough to get thrown in jail for punching one in the face, about six hours after landing. That’s my dad!
At the time, and even now, he cannot comprehend their side. His ability to forgive is masked by hurt and pain from the horrors he had witnessed, the difficult decisions he had made on a daily basis during his tour. He will not open his heart for them, or anyone else that attacks his fragile ego. I suppose I can understand others’ attitudes when I speak out against war; being his daughter. I can see a soldier being furious with me that I am not supporting them in something they fully see as their duty. But, can we not support the person as a human, and not a war? This is the thin line I walk between two worlds: my father’s world and the way I was raised, versus my world and my spiritual truth.

Dad’s world is VERY black and white. It has to be the way he wants it, from only his view. And then, there is the rest of the world. Separate. With him being the supreme ruler of our household, you cannot question him in any sense of the word. It was very difficult for me to grow up in this environment. He raised us like soldiers, but also prim and proper ladies. But never autonomous or free thinking. Have I shown you enough of my character for you to grasp how impossible this was/is for me to live with?? I need reasoning for things. I need to see all sides of the argument, the history, the patterns.

For instance, I researched some very gruesome, despicable men in my Criminal Justice courses for college, only to find they were also victims of abuse and neglect. When there are cases of extreme child abuse on Nancy Grace, I wonder, “Why did they do it?” As you can guess, Dad does not think this way. In fact, he doesn’t think about it at all. ‘She’s guilty! Fry her!” And while this is upsetting to me, I understand this is how he was taught to think. As you can surmise, I did not make it through the criminal justice program. Progressive liberal ways of thinking are much more suited in Early Childhood Development courses, and that is just where I went for my degree!
I often take part in letter writing and email campaigns for various causes dear to my heart. I would like to be more active outside the home, if my health issues improved. I feel the need, and have the right for my voice to be heard. I feel that we are all connected by a cosmic force, and that alone stirs my passion to speak. My dad, on the other hand, does not want to draw attention, anger anyone, or show any signs of protest to ‘The Man.’ It is a wonder I survived adolescence. When I see what I view as an injustice, or see someone or something who cannot speak for themselves, I use my voice. I don’t wait for someone else to step in. I’ve been there many times throughout my life, and would have been relieved if someone spoke for me. It isn’t that I set out to make waves, or piss off my Dad, it just happens that way.

I imagine at the beginning of this piece, you thought was referring to two opposing forces of the Vietnam War. Did you guess by the end that I was using both words to describe me?

Epilogue– After much debate, I shared this with my father. I had to quit reading for a bit after the Gloria Steinem comment, then again after the monks, so he could calm down. (He still is pissed at them.) The whole time, his chapped hands wrung anxiously. A few times he chuckled. He said he liked it, and thought it was good. Then, he talked for about and hour and a half about the war, which is rare for him. Among things, he admitted being stuck in the soldier mentality and in that era.
“The world moved on. I didn’t, ” he said. “I don’t know another way to be.” He still prefers WHITE men in charge; everyone to be Christian; men and women to marry only each other, and settle down to have nice, polite, and obedient children. He fears change so much, that he would rather be stressed and miserable than question why. I, on the other hand, dance with the hungry ghosts in my closet in order to learn about myself. I haplessly run towards the dark, unknown path where I faintly see only a few others ahead to challenge tradition and grow as my true self. But, I guess he already walked a more dangerous, unknown path with a different set of phantoms.

I don’t claim to be more elvolved, or have a clear picture why HE is the way he is, but i am more aware. And this is a start.

Murrieta Teen Takes on Agent Orange

A 17-year-old Murrieta girl is all too familiar with the adverse effects of Agent Orange, a chemical sprayed during the Vietnam War.

Jenna Mack, a 2012 graduate of Murrieta Valley High School, is the granddaughter of a Vietnam War veteran who was exposed to Agent Orange. Her mother is a second-generation sufferer of the ill effects.

Jenna has used Agent Orange as a platform in numerous pageants. She was named Miss Teen Murrieta 2011-2012 and is currently the Royal International Miss Teen California as well as National Miss Heart of the USA Supreme Beauty Queen.

“Jenna uses her titles and pageants as her voice for her platform which is ‘Agent Orange; Fighting for Second Generation Victims’ Rights,’” said her mother, Tanya Mack.

Jenna has taken her message beyond pageants, speaking at engagements at Camp Pendleton and at University of California, Berkeley.

Now Jenna has been invited to serve as a guest educator Aug. 24-30 aboard the NGO Peace Boat as it sails from Japan to Vietnam. Once in Vietnam she will meet with representatives of the U.S. Embassy and will do humanitarian work at a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City.

Jenna’s drive to create awareness comes from watching her mother suffer what doctors have said is a potent genetic mutation caused by Agent Orange.

Jenna’s grandfather, James Sciaccotti, 65, served in the Air Force. He fought in the Vietnam War from 1968-1970.

Part of the United States’ strategy in Vietnam was to conduct an herbicide program to remove foliage providing cover for the enemy, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Agent Orange was the most widely used of the herbicide combinations sprayed.

“That is where he was exposed to Agent Orange and sprayed heavily daily,” Tanya said.

Tanya, 38, said she was born with hip dysplasia. She’s had nearly 30 surgeries to correct it, in addition to suffering from lupus. But her health battles worsened when she was diagnosed with cancer five years ago, she told Patch.

“It has affected my life quite a bit,” Tanya said. “It has been a huge roller coaster. As the oldest child, Jenna has seen it all.”

Jenna, the oldest of three children, was in middle school when her mother was diagnosed with cancer. She changed her mother’s dressings three times a day and at 16, began administering her shots.

At 17, Jenna is a certified emergency medical responder, a certified nursing assistant and is enrolled in a registered nursing program.

“It seems she is well beyond her years, unfortunately, but this trip is very well-deserved and it is going to be an eye-opener for her.

“People to this day are being born with birth defects over there,” she said.

Jenna is attending the trip with Heather Bowser, a second-generation sufferer and an Agent Orange awareness activist.

Bowser is Co- founder and director with Kelly L. Derricks of the newly founded organization, Children of Vietnam Veterans Health Alliance, which Tanya has taken an active role in. Both Bowser and Derricks successfully took on Genentech pharmaceutical when Tanya was refused her medication after the trial drug won FDA appproval. Read the full story Here

“What our goal is and what we are trying to get accomplished is help for second generation victims.”

While numerous studies have been conducted on the lingering effects of Agent Orange—both in veterans and their children—currently the only Agent Orange birth defect recognized is spina bifida, according to Publichealth.va.gov.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs did not immediately respond to a request for comment for this article.

Tanya said the fight is for all second generation victims to be recognized and receive medical benefits.

“It is going to be a long, long road and I may never see it so that is where Jenna comes in.”

London Assembly calls on IOC to review Dow Chemicals Olympics deal

The London Assembly today called on the Olympics organisers to rethink their partner-relationship with Dow Chemicals—the company involved in producing the Agent Orange dioxin used during the Vietnam War.

Assembly members voted to urge Lord Coe’s 2012 committee and the IOC to “consider the environmental, social, ethical and human rights records of companies when awarding high-profile partnership deals.”

Dow and 35 other companies manufactured Agent Orange for the US government which was dropped on Vietnam rain forests in the 1960s which campaigners say got in the food chain and caused genetic birth deformities for generations.

The company, which sponsored the plastic ‘wrap around’ of the Olympic Stadium in east London, also bought Union Carbide, owners of the Bhopal pesticide plant which blew up in the 1984 disaster in India. The official death toll of Bhopal was 2,259, but thousands more died subsequently from poisoning.

“The Bhopal factory site still hasn’t been cleared up almost 30 years after the horrific chemical disaster,” Navin Shah told the Assembly. “The survivors and their families continue to fight for compensation.

“It is time for the 2012 organisers and the IOC to take their ethical and sustainability code seriously and exclude Dow Chemical from future sponsorship deals.”

He put forward a resolution urging organisers to review their partnership with Dow Chemicals.

“We owe it to the victims and their families to demand action and changes to keep out the likes of Dow Chemical from future Games,” he added.

The Assembly urged the IOC to tighten regulations around Olympic sponsorship.

Assembly member Darren Johnson said: “Enthusiasm for the London Games is in danger of being tarnished by association with companies like Dow Chemical.

“Dow bought Union Carbine with its assets and also took on the responsibility—it’s time they lived up to it.”

Campaigners in east London also have a score to settle over its involvement in Agent Orange.

Vietnam Vets Pushing for More Research on “Agent Orange Corn”

Moms and food activists have been fighting genetically modified foods for years. Now, they have a new ally.

Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) sent a letter to President Obama just before Memorial Day asking for his assistance in delaying approval of a new breed of corn that’s genetically modified to resist heavy applications of the herbicide 2,4-D, one of the two active ingredients in the infamous Vietnam-era defoliant Agent Orange.

The corn and 2,4-D are both being manufactured by Dow Agro Science, which has named its new corn “Enlist,” a name the veterans said in the letter was “a slap at all Vietnam veterans.” Multinational seed company Monsanto also manufactures 2,4-D.

Most of the health problems caused by Agent Orange during the Vietnam War have been attributed to unintended dioxin contamination of the two active ingredients, 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T. Dioxin builds up in the fatty tissue of humans and animals and can cause damage for years after exposure. The government continues to add to the known health conditions related to Agent Orange’s dioxin poisoning, but currently they include diabetes, neuropathy, Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, liver dysfunction, numerous cancers, and birth defects in the children of exposed soldiers and Vietnam residents. Studies in recent years have found that 2,4-D is just as likely to be contaminated with dioxin when used alone as it was when used in combination with 2,4,5-T.

Adding to that danger, 2,4-D itself has been linked to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, cell damage, hormonal disruption, and reproductive problems, according to the nonprofit Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), which petitioned the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) earlier this year in an effort to ban the substance permanently. The EPA denied the NRDC’s petition.

“Although there is a lot that science has learned about the effects of dioxin on the human organism, there is still a lot that science has yet to learn,” writes VVA. “Now, Dow and Monsanto wish to release genetically modified corn that has increased resistance to 2,4-D. What will this mean to Vietnam vets, who have already been exposed to this chemical through our military service? To our progeny?”

The group’s letter went on to state that the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) conclusion that 2,4-D–resistant corn would have no “significant” impact on the environment was inaccurate and “raises more questions than it answers.” The vets are asking President Obama to push for more research by independent scientists, not those affiliated with Dow Agro Sciences.

“We are not calling for a complete ban of this new product at this time,” the group writes. “We are simply not willing to be lied to or withheld information from again. Vietnam veterans were lied to about our exposure to chemicals which claimed many lives long after our troops left Southeast Asia.”

The VVA isn’t alone in its attempts to get Obama’s attention. Children of Vietnam Veterans Health Alliance, another group made up of veterans’ children who were impacted by dioxin poisoning and Agent Orange, is endorsing the California ballot initiative that would require labeling of genetically modified ingredients. That initiative will be voted on in the November 2012 election.

The USDA has closed the public comment period on Dow’s 2,4-D–resistant corn, but the nonprofit Center for Food Safety continues to pressure the EPA to ban 2,4-D altogether. Take a minute to sign the center’s petition and to protect your family from the potential for more toxic pesticide exposure.
